What is OMP?
The Ontario Model Parliament endeavours to educate young adults about provincial parliament by immersing them in a challenging and rewarding political experience in the Ontario Legislature. We are dedicated to developing a greater understanding and appreciation of our province's democracy among secondary school students. We aim to spark an interest that encourages a lifetime of active participation in our system of government.
OMP was founded in 1986 by Dr. Paul Bennett, a former history master at Upper Canada College. OMP is a simulation of Ontario's legislative processes. We are not affiliated with any political organizations and out goal is not to further any political cause, other than to ensure that future generations of young Ontarians gain a greater appreciation for our democratic system. We accomplish this by providing a realistic mock parliament at Queen's Park in Toronto each year. Most impressive of all, OMP is an organization for secondary school students run by secondary school students.
OMP Today
Today we welcome over 200 secondary school students on an annual basis from across Ontario. OMP provides them with the ability to experience parliament as if they were real Members of Provincial Parliament. Delegates decide which party to join, elect a leader, craft party policy, write bills, calculate a budget and, finally, participate in the three day simulation of parliament at Queen's Park. No stone is left unturned during the Simulation in April as delegates debate the issues they have been following, crafting policy on and writing bills about since Elections Day in March.
